I'm a Community Governor now having started out as a Parent Governor about 13 years ago. The reason that I volunteered for election then was to ensure that, whilst working full time and therefore unable to make it into school often, I had an opportunity to have a good understanding of, and provide some support to, Tyntesfield.
My professional background is mainly in Human Resources and I try to bring this knowledge to my work with the Governing Body by chairing the Personnel Committee and getting involved in various aspects of people management at school e.g. recruitment, performance management and policies.
Being a governor also gives me an insight into how the public sector and, in particular education works. This gives me a different perspective to the one I see working in the private sector.
I have been a teacher at Tyntesfield for 7 years and have been teaching for 15 years. Prior to teaching I was a training Officer for a Youth Training Scheme and a part-time Youth Worker. After having my children I started to help in the Nursery class at Oldfield Brow and enjoyed every minute. I then decided I wanted to be Nursery Teacher and completed my PGCE. I have taught Year 1 but my passion is Nursery.
I am married with two grown up daughters, one who is working in Manchester and one who is still at University.
I love spending time with my family which usually involves me cooking, something which I really enjoy.
I am newly recruited as the Teacher Governor and I am looking forward to my role as the link between school and the Governors.
My name is Caroline Friar and I am in my third term of office as a governor at Tyntesfield. I am vice chair of the governing body, chair of the curriculum committee and a member of the personnel committee. I am also the governor responsible for safeguarding. I work at Seymour Park Community Primary School in Old Trafford as Assistant Headteacher and Year 6 teacher - I have been there for 5 years. Prior to this, I worked as a teaching assistant in different schools within Sale – one of which was Tyntesfield. I have two children who both attended Tyntesfield Primary School and had many a happy time there. In my spare time, I enjoy running, swimming and generally keeping fit. However my favourite pastime is going on holiday and spending time with my family. I very much enjoy my role as a governor and the involvement that I have with the school.
My connection with Tyntesfield Primary School started in 1985 when my eldest daughter joined the Infant Department (no Nursery then!). I did some part-time work in the school office and then was appointed School Secretary, a position I held for ten years. Whilst working at the School I represented the non-teaching staff on the Governing Body and, when I left, I was appointed a Community Governor, which gives me the opportunity to keep in contact and to still contribute to the work of the school. I serve on the Finance and Buildings sub-committees.
Since “retiring” I spend my time doing voluntary work for St Alban’s Church, Broadheath and seeing my grandchildren; my interests include gardening, reading and following various sports, particularly cricket.
Sue Astley is involved with the education of children and young people from primary school to postgraduate level - as a member of the Curriculum Committee at Tyntesfield, as chairman of Blessed Thomas Holford’s Curriculum Committee, and in her work as an academic at Manchester University Medical School. She is a Reader in Medical Imaging and has conducted research in breast cancer imaging for over twenty years, looking at new methods of detecting cancer and measuring factors that contribute to cancer risk. She is the mother of two teenage boys and enjoys watching them play rugby, football and various musical instruments.
A resident of Sale for more than 35 years. Married to Jane, with three children, all of whom attended Tyntesfield School.
Now retired, but previously worked for 32 years for a U.S. Cereal Manufacturer, and held a number of management positions, including European Procurement Manager and Project Manager for a number of Major Capital Projects. My qualifications include a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University.
I have been a Community Governor of the school for more than 20 years, and have served on the Finance Committee during all of that time.
I am Treasurer of a local Sports Club and also spend time on Charitable fund raising in the local community and also in Kenya.
Non Teaching Governor
My name is Julie Harris and I have worked at Tyntesfield Primary School for 9 years in the role of School Secretary. My position as a Non-Teaching Staff Governor is helping me gain a greater understanding of the work the Governing Body undertake to help support the successful running of the School.
I have been Headteacher at Tyntesfield for 3 years, prior to this I was Headteacher at a school in Stretford, for six years. I am proud to be Headteacher at our school and am fortunate to work alongside enthusiastic and talented staff, committed governors, supportive parents and fantastic children.
