ENGLISH

English

English is integral to all aspects of school life, in addition to the timetabled English lessons. As our language, it is fundamental to communicate both orally and through the written word. It is therefore our aim to develop all children to their full potential, giving equal opportunities to every child.

We believe that successful teaching of English is essential if children are to achieve in all areas of the curriculum. We aim to develop our pupils’ abilities within an integrated programme of speaking & listening, reading & writing. Pupils are given opportunities to interrelate the requirements of English within a broad and balanced approach to the teaching of English across the curriculum, with opportunities to consolidate and reinforce taught English skills.

We believe that pupils ‘understanding of English is enhanced through an active, direct and challenging approach to engaging stimuli, using opportunities to deepen pupil understanding of word, sentence and whole text development. Teaching staff aim to integrate English skills during lessons, whilst encouraging pupils to apply their understanding in different contexts to further deepen their knowledge of the subject.

Reading

We instil a love of reading in pupils through lessons, author visits, allocated reading time and a well-stocked library! Pupil’s reading skills are developed through engaging with a wide range of reading material and media, with a focus on the use of questioning; to challenge thinking at all levels.

Writing

At Tyntesfield we recognise that quality writing is a product of following a process of planning, crafting a range of engaging sentences, using success criteria, drafting and editing. From Nursery upwards pupils are immersed in rich opportunities for writing and take great pride in improving their vocabulary and developing their individual writing style.

Teaching spelling, punctuation and grammar skills is an integral part of our English lessons and pupils’ proficiency is developed through imaginative, stimulating and interactive activities.
