Phonics is all about sounds. There are 44 sounds in the English language, which we put together to form words. Some sounds are represented by 1 letter, like ‘t’ and some by two or more, like ‘ck’ in duck. Children are taught these sounds and how to match them to letters.
Phonics is the building block of reading and writing and equips children with the skills needed to become independent readers and writers.
We implement a structured approach to the teaching of phonics which begins on entry to the Nursery and continues throughout the school, incorporating spelling strategies and rules. There are two elements of teaching phonics; segmenting and blending which are taught in parallel. Throughout the teaching of phonics, children are also introduced to tricky words, words which do not follow the conventions taught, like ‘the’ and ‘said’.
In Nursery, children are introduced to initial letter sounds using stories, actions and puppets.
In Reception, children are taught the main 44 sounds of English and with this knowledge are taken through stages of blending sounds to form words and then reading. At the same time they are taught to write by identifying the sounds in words and relating the letters to those sounds alongside correct letter formation.In Early Years and through in to KS1, phonics is taught using the Read Write Inc. scheme which gives a structured approach to learning new sounds and tricky words.
In Year 1, children are also taught phonics through the Read Write Inc. Programme, building on their secure knowledge of the sounds taught in Reception. New sounds are taught alongside constant reinforcement of previously learnt sounds as over-learning, (i.e. revisiting and practising) is central to our approach. High Frequency / Tricky words are taught alongside our phonics programme.
By the end of Year 2, it is expected that children will be confidently reading and working towards spelling 'Read Write Inc.' Stage 3 sounds (Speed Sounds 1, 2, 3). It is expected that children will also confidently reading and working towards spelling ‘Stage 3’ High Frequency / Tricky words.
Pupils very much enjoy coming to school... They feel safe in the stimulating environment into which they are warmly welcomed... One pupil stated that, ‘You can be yourself here.’
